As Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares for a high-profile visit to Washington, D.C., diplomatic tensions are simmering beneath the surface. The recent deportation of 104 Indian nationals from the United States has ignited widespread outrage, with disturbing images of shackled deportees flooding international media. This mass deportation, conducted on what is reported to be the longest military flight used for such purposes, underscores the harsh realities of U.S. immigration enforcement under former President Donald Trump’s administration.
For Kulvinder Kaur of Hoshiarpur, Punjab, the nightmare began when her husband, Harvinder Singh, disappeared from her daily calls. Weeks of unanswered attempts spiraled into dread until she stumbled upon news footage showing deported Indian immigrants. Harvinder, a 40-year-old father of two, was among them—his hands and legs shackled during a grueling 40-hour journey back to India.
Harvinder’s story is a grim reflection of the desperation that drives many Indians to risk perilous journeys for the elusive promise of a better life. He had traversed jungles, rivers, and treacherous borders, all to secure a future for his family. His return, bound in chains, symbolizes the collapse of dreams that were financed through crippling debts and the sale of family lands.
The visuals of Indian citizens, chained and herded like criminals onto a U.S. military aircraft, have sparked fierce protests in India. Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, donned handcuffs outside the Parliament in a symbolic demonstration against what they termed as ‘inhumane treatment’ of Indian nationals. The timing of these deportations—mere days before Modi’s scheduled meeting with Trump—has led to pointed questions about the nature of their diplomatic rapport.
Critics argue that if Modi and Trump share such a strong bond, why is New Delhi seemingly powerless to prevent such indignities against its citizens? The Modi administration finds itself navigating a diplomatic tightrope, balancing immigration issues against broader geopolitical interests like trade negotiations and defense partnerships.
Harsh Pant, a geopolitical analyst at the Observer Research Foundation, explains, “India faces a complex challenge. The U.S. relationship is multifaceted, involving trade tariffs, strategic alliances, and now immigration. The government has to decide when to confront and when to compromise.”
While nations like Brazil have vocally protested the harsh treatment of their deported citizens, India’s response has been more subdued. This perceived diplomatic passivity has fueled public dissatisfaction, with many questioning the government’s commitment to protecting its diaspora.
The Trump administration’s hardline immigration policy left little room for discretion. U.S. Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks publicly stated, “If you cross illegally, you will be removed,” sharing footage of the deportees in restraints. The administration defended its actions, citing longstanding procedures that allow the use of restraints during deportations, a practice in place since 2012.
However, the images of shackled men, women, and even reports of restrained children have drawn international condemnation. Anil Trigunayat, a former Indian diplomat, remarked, “Such treatment is not only unnecessary but exposes a crude facet of American immigration enforcement.”
For deportees like Harvinder Singh, the journey home is just the beginning of a new struggle. The financial burden of failed migration attempts is staggering. Kaur laments their $55,000 debt, accumulated through loans and the sale of their farmland. The emotional and economic scars left by such experiences ripple beyond individual families, affecting entire communities in regions heavily reliant on remittances from abroad.
Vinod Kumar, a sociology professor specializing in diaspora studies, notes, “These deportations crush not only the hopes of individuals but also destabilize local economies. The ripple effects can be felt across generations.”
This incident is more than a bilateral issue; it’s a human rights concern that demands global attention. As Modi prepares to engage with U.S. leaders, the Indian public and the international community await concrete actions to ensure the dignity and safety of migrants worldwide.
