Egypt Developing Gaza Reconstruction Plan to Counter Trump’s ‘Take Over’

Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, has confirmed that Cairo is actively developing a comprehensive, multi-phase reconstruction plan for Gaza. This initiative aims to provide a viable alternative to United States President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to “take over” the territory and relocate its population. The Egyptian government is positioning itself as a key player in rebuilding Gaza while ensuring Palestinians remain in their homeland.

According to Egypt’s state-run Al-Ahram newspaper, the reconstruction plan is expected to be finalized within the next week, with its first phase commencing after the emergency Arab summit in Cairo on February 27. The initiative has garnered regional interest, with officials from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan set to convene in Riyadh to discuss the plan.

Trump’s return to the White House has reignited international tensions, particularly regarding his suggestions that the US could “take over” Gaza, permanently relocate its more than two million residents, and repurpose the enclave into a commercial hub. The proposal has faced staunch opposition from Egypt and Jordan, with rights groups condemning it as “ethnic cleansing.”

Egypt’s alternative reconstruction strategy aims to establish “secure areas” within Gaza for temporary housing while international construction firms work to rebuild essential infrastructure. The plan, which could span up to five years, will generate tens of thousands of jobs for Gaza’s population, Egyptian officials told The Associated Press (AP) on condition of anonymity.

Cairo is also engaging with European and Arab partners, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE, to secure financial backing for its plan. Sources report that an international conference on Gaza’s reconstruction is being discussed as a potential means to pool resources.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed his commitment to Trump’s vision of “a different Gaza,” while Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz announced plans for a special directorate to facilitate the “voluntary departure” of Palestinians willing to emigrate to third countries. This initiative, however, remains controversial and widely criticized.

As tensions escalate, Hamas has indicated its willingness to relinquish control over Gaza, suggesting a unity government or a technocratic committee to oversee administration of the Strip. The group’s stance adds another layer of complexity to ongoing diplomatic efforts.

The unfolding situation has far-reaching implications for Middle Eastern diplomacy. The outcome of Egypt’s reconstruction efforts and Trump’s aggressive stance could redefine power dynamics in the region. With key summits on the horizon, the international community will be closely monitoring Cairo’s ability to position its plan as a credible alternative to Trump’s controversial vision.
