The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), Africa’s most prestigious celebration of film and television, is set to return for its highly anticipated 11th edition. With a legacy of honoring excellence in African cinema, the AMVCAs continue to be a defining force in the industry, spotlighting the continent’s finest talents while propelling African storytelling onto the global stage.
At a press conference held at the Africa Magic Studios in Lagos, organizers unveiled key dates and major updates for this milestone event. The official nominee announcement will air across all Africa Magic channels on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at 7 PM WAT, while the grand awards ceremony will take place on May 10, 2025, in Lagos. This year’s edition promises to be a landmark celebration, introducing fresh innovations and expanding its reach to a global audience.
Since its inception, the AMVCAs have set the gold standard for African film and television recognition. Partnering with MultiChoice, the awards have honored 267 outstanding creatives across multiple categories, invested over ₦10 billion in production, and contributed to the creation of more than 30,000 jobs within the entertainment sector. The impact is undeniable, with over 60% of industry professionals acknowledging the AMVCAs as a major driving force behind the growth of African cinema and 76% crediting the awards for bringing international recognition to African films.
John Ugbe, CEO of MultiChoice West Africa, emphasized the AMVCAs’ commitment to elevating African cinema on a global scale.
“For over a decade, the AMVCAs have been instrumental in showcasing African talent. As we embark on a new era, MultiChoice remains dedicated to raising the bar, fostering international collaborations, and ensuring that African films receive the recognition they deserve,” he said.
To make this edition truly unforgettable, organizers have introduced several exciting innovations:
- New Category for Music and Sound in Film: Recognizing the critical role of music and sound design in storytelling, this category will spotlight the unsung heroes behind the immersive cinematic experience.
- Global Recognition for African Talent: The AMVCAs will introduce international collaborations, welcoming Black and Diasporan creatives into the fold and amplifying African stories worldwide.
- Honoring Nollywood Pioneers: A new initiative will pay tribute to industry veterans who laid the foundation for Nollywood’s success, preserving their legacy for future generations.
- Enhanced Jury System: A refined approach will ensure a balanced evaluation process, merging expert critique with audience appreciation to maintain the credibility and prestige of the awards.
