Juma Bah’s story is one of incredible determination and rapid ascension in the world of football, capturing the imagination of millions. From working at his father’s bakery in the heart of Sierra Leone to now being a rising star at Manchester City, Bah’s journey is nothing short of a modern-day fairytale. What seemed like an impossible dream for the teenager, just a year ago, is now a stunning reality as he finds himself poised to play under Pep Guardiola in the world’s most competitive football league. Bah, who spent his early years juggling chores and training in Sierra Leone’s streets, has defied all odds to become one of the most talked-about young defenders in Europe.
At just 19 years old, Bah’s rapid rise through the ranks is a testament to his talent and hard work. His football career began on dusty pitches, often surrounded by the challenges of his West African homeland. Nine months ago, he was playing domestic league games on artificial turf, yet now, thanks to his performances for Real Valladolid in Spain, he finds himself with a coveted spot at Manchester City. Bah’s journey from a young boy who carried firewood to help his father’s bakery to training with world-class footballers at one of the best clubs in the world shows the power of dedication, resilience, and belief.

Bah’s rise was not a smooth journey. While juggling the daily chores of helping his parents, he never gave up on his love for football. “At 4 am I carried wood, because my father usually bakes early in the morning,” Bah explained, reflecting on his humble beginnings. Despite this, his passion for football never faded. In fact, it was this relentless spirit that pushed him to join AIK Freetong, a third-tier side in Sierra Leone, in April 2021. Within months, he had progressed to the Sierra Leone Premier League, marking the beginning of his remarkable rise.
After his stint in the Sierra Leone Premier League, Bah moved to Europe for a trial at AIK in Sweden, and soon after, joined Real Valladolid on loan in August 2024. It was there that his potential truly began to shine. His performances with Valladolid’s second team were impressive, and he quickly earned a promotion to the senior squad. It didn’t take long for the young defender to showcase his talents on La Liga’s biggest stage. In September 2024, he made his debut for Valladolid against Real Sociedad, marking one of the most emotional moments of his career. “It was amazing, the best day for me,” Bah recalled of his debut. His mother, who had supported him every step of the way, watched the game with joy and pride, a moment Bah described as a blessing.

By the beginning of 2025, Bah was already establishing himself as a regular in the Valladolid squad. His exceptional talent caught the eye of Manchester City, who swiftly made the move to secure him for their squad. However, Bah’s path to the Premier League wasn’t without controversy. After Valladolid exercised the option to sign him permanently in early January, Bah made the bold decision to terminate his contract, paying his own buy-out fee and joining Manchester City. Valladolid expressed their displeasure, accusing the Premier League club of encouraging the move, but Bah remained steadfast in his decision. “I am the one who did that to terminate my contract,” he stated, explaining that he had been dissatisfied with his treatment and low wages at the Spanish club.
Bah’s potential has not gone unnoticed by others in the football world. Mohamed Kallon, the newly appointed coach of Sierra Leone, who had a storied career in Europe with clubs like Inter Milan and Monaco, has lauded Bah as a “great prospect.” Kallon believes that the young defender has what it takes to make it at the highest levels of European football. “He can succeed in Europe. Manchester City bought him because they see something in him,” Kallon said, emphasizing Bah’s potential to grow and succeed at the top level.

Bah’s rise through the ranks has been swift, but it is clear that he is not taking it for granted. “My aim is to win trophies,” Bah shared, looking ahead to his future at Manchester City. However, he remains humble, recognizing that there is much more work to be done. After completing his transfer to Manchester City, Bah was immediately loaned out to Lens, a French Ligue 1 side, to continue his development. His first start for the club in a 1-0 victory over Marseille was a sign of things to come, as he continues to show the promise that made Manchester City so eager to sign him.
As Bah continues his journey, it is clear that his talent, work ethic, and dedication have set him on a path to greatness. His rise from the streets of Freetown to the Premier League is a remarkable achievement, and it is only the beginning of what promises to be an exciting career. With Manchester City’s resources and Pep Guardiola’s mentorship, Bah’s potential is limitless. His story serves as a reminder that no dream is too big, and with hard work, determination, and the right opportunities, anything is possible.
