U.S. President Donald Trump signed a Gaza peace document during a high-level summit in Cairo, Egypt, on Monday, marking what international diplomats are calling a “historic milestone” toward ending years of conflict between Israel and Hamas.
The agreement, witnessed by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Qatari mediators, aims to solidify the full release of Israeli hostages and establish a lasting ceasefire in Gaza. The signing came just hours after the final group of hostages returned home to Israel, ending more than two years of captivity.
“This is the moment the world has been waiting for,” Trump said during the ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Cairo. “Peace in the Middle East has been 3,000 years in the making. Today we take a step closer to achieving it.”
The Gaza peace document lays out a framework for permanent cessation of hostilities, coordinated humanitarian aid, and the gradual reconstruction of Gaza under international supervision. Egypt and Qatar will jointly oversee the implementation phase, working with the United Nations and the United States to monitor compliance and support rebuilding efforts.
Under the terms of the agreement, Israel will ease restrictions on humanitarian shipments into Gaza, while Hamas has committed to disarmament and to allowing international observers to operate within the enclave. The deal also includes provisions for prisoner exchanges and the creation of a multilateral task force to oversee Gaza’s post-war recovery.
World leaders have praised the Cairo summit as a pivotal diplomatic breakthrough. The UN Secretary-General welcomed the agreement as “a courageous step toward stability,” while European and Arab officials emphasized that the peace process must now translate into tangible change for civilians.
Israeli officials described the deal as a new beginning after years of bloodshed, while Palestinian representatives said it offered “a chance for renewal and reconstruction” after the devastating humanitarian toll of war.
Analysts say the signing of the document could reshape the political landscape of the region. Trump’s reemergence as a diplomatic actor has drawn global attention, as he seeks to position himself once again as a broker of peace in the Middle East.
Crowds gathered outside the Egyptian capital to celebrate the announcement, waving flags and chanting for peace as leaders emerged from the summit. The symbolism of Cairo, a longtime mediator in regional conflicts, underscored Egypt’s central role in maintaining stability and facilitating dialogue between Israel and its neighbors.
The success of the agreement will depend on sustained cooperation between all parties involved. Diplomats caution that rebuilding trust after decades of hostility will require patience, transparency, and continued international engagement.
