Three killed in U.S. strike on suspected drug boat in international waters

November 7, 2025

The U.S. military has carried out a strike on a vessel suspected of involvement in drug trafficking in the Caribbean Sea, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, according to U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The operation took place in international waters, and the Pentagon described the targeted boat as being operated by a “Designated Terrorist Organization.”

This incident marks the latest in a series of at least 17 maritime strikes by U.S. forces since early September, targeting suspected drug-smuggling boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific regions. The cumulative death toll from these operations is now estimated at around 69 individuals.

According to the Pentagon, no U.S. personnel were harmed during the latest operation. Defense officials released footage showing the vessel being struck and subsequently exploding. The strike is part of an intensified campaign aimed at disrupting narcotics flows and alleged “narco-terrorist” operations that officials say pose a direct threat to U.S. national security.

The escalation of military action in international waters has raised legal and diplomatic concerns. Human rights groups and regional governments have questioned the legality of these operations, noting that the evidence used to justify the strikes has not been fully disclosed.

The continued campaign reflects a significant shift in U.S. counter-narcotics strategy, moving away from traditional law enforcement interdiction toward direct military engagement at sea. Analysts warn that this approach could increase tensions with neighboring countries and complicate maritime security cooperation across the Americas.
