Five Years After Brexit: Navigating the Impact of the U.K.'s EU Departure

Five years ago, on January 31, 2020, the United Kingdom officially bid farewell to the European Union, ending nearly five decades of membership. The momentous decision to leave the EU, commonly known as Brexit, has since sparked profound political, economic, and social consequences, many of which continue to shape the nation today.

For those in favor of Brexit, leaving the EU was a triumph of sovereignty, promising greater control over borders, laws, and economic policies. However, for opponents, it marked a step into isolation, positioning the U.K. at odds with its closest neighbors and potentially undermining its global standing. The referendum that initiated the process, held in June 2016, exposed deep divisions within the British public, ultimately resulting in a 52% to 48% vote in favor of leaving the EU. What followed was a tangled, often contentious series of negotiations between the U.K. and the EU, which culminated in a last-minute trade deal on Christmas Eve 2020.

Despite the deal, the economic repercussions of Brexit are undeniable. The U.K. left the EU’s single market and customs union, and businesses now face new bureaucratic hurdles, higher costs, and shipping delays. Companies like My Nametags, which had previously relied on seamless trade with the EU, found themselves setting up bases in Ireland to maintain their operations. Small businesses, in particular, have struggled, with some abandoning trade with the EU altogether, while others have moved their manufacturing overseas to mitigate the impact.

The trade agreements struck by the U.K. with countries such as Australia, Canada, and New Zealand were celebrated as new opportunities post-Brexit. However, trade experts argue that these deals have not offset the significant losses incurred by severing ties with the EU, Britain’s largest trading partner. While larger industries, such as aerospace and pharmaceuticals, have managed to weather the storm, smaller players have found it much more difficult to maintain their market share.

One of the more unexpected outcomes of Brexit has been in the realm of immigration. Despite the desire to reduce immigration that played a major role in the Brexit vote, the U.K. has actually seen a rise in immigration levels. The government has granted more visas for workers from around the world, undermining one of the key promises made during the Leave campaign. Meanwhile, the rise of protectionist rhetoric globally, particularly from the United States, has complicated the U.K.’s position as it tries to balance its relationships with Europe and its historical ally across the Atlantic.

Looking ahead, public opinion in the U.K. has shifted, with many now acknowledging that Brexit may have been a mistake. However, rejoining the EU remains unlikely, as the process of leaving has left lasting scars, both politically and emotionally. Labour Party Prime Minister Keir Starmer has promised to reset relations with the EU, but without rejoining the single market or customs union. His focus will be on fostering cooperation in areas like law enforcement and security, with a more measured approach to the relationship.

The lasting impact of Brexit is still unfolding, and it will take time to fully understand its long-term consequences. While the immediate fallout has been painful for many, there is hope that the U.K. and the EU will find ways to rebuild their relationship, even if it happens quietly and without fanfare.
