Kayaker Swallowed and Spat Out by Whale in Chile’s Patagonian Waters

In an astonishing turn of events off the southern coast of Chile, a kayaker found himself at the mercy of a massive humpback whale that briefly swallowed him and his kayak, only to spit him out moments later without harm. The extraordinary incident unfolded on Saturday near the Patagonian city of Punta Arenas, leaving onlookers—and the kayaker himself—stunned by the incredible escape.

Adrian Simancas, 24, was paddling peacefully when the massive baleen creature surged out of the frigid waters and engulfed both him and his yellow kayak in its cavernous mouth. The whale, a graceful giant, briefly submerged the kayaker, but within five seconds, Simancas resurfaced, with the whale’s dorsal fin emerging above the water, signifying its retreat.

In a mix of shock and relief, Simancas could only exclaim, “I thought he’d swallowed me!” as the surreal nature of the experience settled in. Meanwhile, the entire episode, captured on camera by Simancas’ father, Dell Simancas, quickly went viral on social media. The video, which shows the dramatic moment the whale surfaces and then swims away, features Dell’s frantic voice shouting, “Relax! Relax!” as he attempts to calm his understandably shaken son.

The moment was tense as Dell directed his son to “Grab it, grab it,” urging him to hold onto the kayak to stay afloat as the whale swam calmly behind them. “Relax, relax, I’m coming,” he continued, offering a reassuring voice amidst the confusion.

“I saw something blue and white passing close to my face, and it was like on one side and above me,” Adrian later recalled in an interview with Chile’s TVN channel. “I didn’t understand what was happening, and then I sank. I thought it had eaten me.”

The heart-stopping moment when Adrian disappeared underwater for several seconds left his father in a brief state of panic, recalling, “I turned around and didn’t see him, I didn’t see Adrian. That was the only moment of fear I really had, because I didn’t see him for like three seconds. And suddenly he shot out.”

While the encounter was undoubtedly frightening, experts have reassured the public that the whale likely could not have swallowed the kayaker. According to marine biologist Maria Jose Perez from the University of Chile, humpback whales have relatively small throats, which makes swallowing a human or kayak physically impossible. “It seems that the kayak was right in the whale’s feeding patch, such as krill or fish,” Perez explained. This is why the whale was likely seen “emerging to the surface sideways, with its mouth open.”

Perez noted that such events are extremely rare, and usually occur when small boats, such as kayaks, inadvertently enter the whale’s feeding grounds. The sheer size and power of these creatures make for a spectacle that few will ever experience firsthand.

The incident has captivated audiences worldwide, sparking a global conversation about the fascinating interactions between humans and marine life, as well as the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters. It also raises important questions about the growing need for awareness and responsible interaction with the oceans, particularly as more people engage in recreational activities like kayaking and boating in areas frequented by large marine mammals.

This rare event serves as a reminder of the sheer majesty and mystery of the natural world and the ways in which humans can sometimes find themselves in the midst of extraordinary occurrences. Although it was a harrowing experience for Adrian Simancas, his lucky escape is a testament to the unpredictability and wonder of nature, as well as a striking moment of human resilience and connection with wildlife.
